Official NSW Child-Seat Rules (Taxi, Rideshare & Private Transfers)

NSW requires children to be secured in an appropriate, approved restraint based on age and size. These rules apply to point-to-point services (taxis, hire cars, rideshare and private transfers). Age-based quick reference

  • Under 6 months Rear-facing restraint only.
  • 6 months to under 4 years Rear- or forward-facing restraint with in-built harness.
  • 4 to under 7 years Forward-facing restraint or booster with correctly positioned seatbelt.
  • 7 years and over Adult seatbelt permitted if it fits correctly; booster recommended until safe belt fit.
0–6 months: rear-facing only
6–48 months: rear- or forward-facing with harness
4–7 years: forward-facing or booster with belt guide
7+ years: adult belt if correct fit
